Free drama activity of the month - Count to Twenty

September 2, 2010

Get the children concentrating and working together with Count to Twenty.

It’s great for getting the group in tune with each other, and you can adapt for MFL too!

Get the children to sit or stand in a circle facing inwards.

The aim of the game is to count up to 20 with only one person saying a number at a time.

Anybody can begin the counting, then a different person says the next number and so on. But if two people say the number at the same time, the counting must go back to 1.

The children will really have to concentrate and work together to get to 20!

You can use it to help children learn numbers in MFL, count backwards, or if you want to make it really hard, have them all close their eyes or face outwards!

The Quest for Volcanoes & Earthquakes drama workshop

April 23, 2010

Volcanoes & EarthquakesOne natural phenomenon that has had a lot of press in Europe and around the world lately is the eruption of Iceland’s now famous Eyjafjallajokull volcano - try pronouncing that one! We spent a good twenty minutes trying to find a YouTube video that would reveal this to us but found that most of the posts were more amusing than educational.

The volcano’s eruption has prevented many teachers and support staff from returning from their holidays for the start of the summer term, which is probably a lot less fun than it sounds!

The Quest for Volcanoes & Earthquakes is a new cross-curricular workshop that we developed last term and is now available all year round. Read more about our Quest for Knowledge workshops or email us to check availability.

Mr Sims, Timbercroft Primary School, Greenwich

“Provided us with great ideas which we can incorporate into lessons - keep the children focused!”
Kellie Ryder, Vicarage Primary School, Newham

“Teachers motivated and keen to explore the techniques with their class - especially good at motivating staff at the end of a long day.”
Jenny Saidi, Thomas Buxton Infant School, Tower Hamlets

“Fun and exciting! Very well led and structured. The children wanted to do even more drama!”
Christina Savva, London Fields Primary School, Hackney

“Children loved it and were engaged throughout! Very impressed with the performer and her skill with the children. It was perfect – great vocabulary and history links.”

Freshwater end Spring on a high with MFL events

April 13, 2010

MFL INSET 110310 03MFL INSET 110310 01We had a very busy end to the Spring term here at Freshwater, not least with hosting our ‘Teaching MFL through Drama’ Inset workshop. The session was a great success with teachers from across London joining us for an evening of fun and creativity, and leaving with some very useful ideas for teaching languages (if we do say so ourselves!)

Keeley Donati from Chingford Hall Primary School told us: “I already plan to use some ideas this week. When’s the next one?!”

If you’d also like to know when the next one is, or to find out how we can deliver an MFL Inset session at your school, click here or e-mail us.

Also last term, we were very pleased to be invited to appear at the CILT Annual Conference for Merton and Kingston, where we performed our MFL Storytelling for 70 teachers (some of whom showed off their acting skills when they took on roles in The Three Little Pigs)! We were very lucky to meet so many teachers who are passionate about languages, and hope to be visiting their schools in the coming months.

If you’re hosting a languages day this term, get in touch to grab your ideal date for our MFL Storytelling – we’re filling up fast!

Leap into Sign Language workshops: The benefits for you and your students

January 29, 2010

BSL - Leap into Sign LanguageThere are 9 million people in the UK who are deaf or hearing impaired - that’s 15% of the entire population. For around 70,000 profoundly deaf people British Sign Language (BSL) is their first language and opens the door for fluent communication and equal access to the world around them. The only problem is that too few hearing people know how to communicate with it. BSL was recognised by the government as a language in its own right in 2003 and it has been proposed that it should be included in the curriculum alongside other modern foreign languages.

What are the benefits of introducing your students to BSL and learning some signs?

*Raising awareness, inclusion and understanding of the deaf community and BSL

*It is an expressive and beautiful language - great for improving presentation and communication skills

*Future career opportunities - there is currently a shortage of BSL interpreters in the UK

*Children might have deaf friends, family members or future work colleagues

*Supports many education initiatives such as Every Child Matters, citizenship and SEAL initiatives

From April 2010, we are excited to offer Leap into Sign Language to schools and other venues throughout London and the South East, presented as highly interactive small group workshops or to larger groups using storytelling techniques. Our specialist BSL facilitator will combine storytelling, poetry, songs and games with learning some basic BSL signs in this highly visual and expressive language. The fun activities will heighten your students’ awareness and improve their communication skills.

Call us on 0844 800 2870 or email us for further information.

Are you celebrating World Book Day in March?

January 25, 2010

World Book Day 2010Did you know that the origins of World Book Day can be traced back to Catalonia over eighty years ago?

Or that most countries in the world actually mark it on April 23rd (St George’s Day) but in the UK and Ireland, it’s usually held it during the first week of March to fit in with school term dates?

You can find out more about the history of the day and how to access resources like book tokens on the World Book Day website.

If you’d like to inject some theatrics into your literacy celebrations, Freshwater is on hand with lots of exciting drama workshops.
What better way to learn about the Katie Morag stories than being whisked away to Struay in An Island Home or be transported back in time to explore the ancient stories of Beowulf, King Midas or The Prince and the Pauper?
Your students can take part in two of the most popular children’s stories in Rainbow Fish plus Where the Wild Things Are, or hear about a little girl and her fisherman grandfather in A Caribbean Story.
If that wasn’t enough, early years pupils can join in an adventure in the Early Years Story Hunts. As we are thespians, we couldn’t possibly let the occasion pass without a nod to one of the most famous Englishmen to put pen to paper - we have workshops available on many of Shakespeare’s plays including Romeo & Juliet, Macbeth and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Phew! It looks like Thursday 4th March could be a very busy day…
To browse the full range of story based workshops we offer, please see the below links:

MFL Storytelling sessions - in French, German & Spanish
Or you can give us a call on 0844 800 2870 to find out more.
