New Workshop: Democracy, Law and Liberty

Book our brand new workshop to feel connected to changes throughout our political past...

Order, order! Invite the Speaker of the House into your school to take your class on a fascinating and fact-filled journey to discover the history of democracy, law and liberty, enthusing and inspiring children to live out these British Values in their schools and communities.

In this 60 minute workshop your children will discover the evolution of parliament and democracy in Britain. Focusing on crucial historic moments like the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215, and more recent key reforms such as equal franchise and women's fight for suffrage, your children will consider the impact that these changes have on our lives today and feel empowered to promote British values themselves.

The session will give children a broader understanding of how politics can change both very quickly and over time. Social structures or rules that may at first seem fixed and permanent, such as being allowed to vote at age 18, have not always been the case. Allow your children to see what is possible from their own participation in politics and society.

This session also has strong curriculum links to:

  • Understanding ‘British Values’ as part of pupils’ Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development
  • Gaining and deploying historically grounded understanding of abstract terms such as ‘parliament’
  • The changing power of monarchs using case studies such as John, (Anne and Victoria)
  • Studying an aspect or theme in British history that extends pupils’ chronological knowledge beyond 1066
  • Participation in discussions, presentations, performances, role play, improvisations and debate

Perfect as part of: a political week, in a wider topic about women's rights, or an SMSC development day!
